In the African Music Industry, the artist remains the player and the industry its playground. An artist who’s on the journey to success must take note of mistakes to avoid as an Independent Artist.

In all professions, there are always do’s and don’ts, the rules of the game are set and the players play to it whichever way they want. The ability to stay disciplined and consistent on the dos while avoiding the don’ts will determine the success of the player.

Here are 10 common mistakes to avoid as an Independent Artist in 2024

  1. No Promotion.

As an emerging artist, your entire soul and well being should hate the thought of putting out a song or project without promotional plans in place. it’s simply a waste of time, energy and resources. Come to think of it, more than 50,000 songs are released daily and you don’t want to promote them? nah.

Regardless of how tight your budget is, always have a promotional plan set for your release.

  1. Let’s manage it like that.

This isn’t 1981 bro, you can’t afford to put out subpar music, thinking it will blow up. News flash, it won’t. For no reason, should you put out a song that’s not well recorded, mixed and mastered.ย  Every single one must be top quality. That is the way to get ahead in the competitive music market.

  1. One man Mopol.

This absurd belief has killed more dreams than self-doubt. It’s sad when emerging artist is trying to do everything by themselves. How far do you think you can go with that? truth is, you can’t go far.

As an independent artist, The essence of having a team can not be over emphasized. Take your time, and get a team. One man Mopol or “Do it Yourself” mindset won’t take you as far as you want.

  1. Irregular Use of Social Media.

In case you don’t know, social media is the big uncle of music now. Music isn’t wholly distributed and connected to fans without the use and support of social media.

Avoid the mistake of not using your social media regularly. if it’s too much of a hassle, get a social media manager. But if you’re tight on budget, then you’ll have to create a schedule that works in your favour.

  1. Not Collaborating.

“I just want to do my thing you know… just be in my own space” the emerging artiste says. This is understandable because creatives connect and get inspired in different forms but not collaborating with others will limit your outreach and speed of growth in this new era. The synergy and inspiration that comes from working with others, the introduction to a new audience and the ROI are too attractive to be ignored. Collaborate!

  1. Avoid Freebies.

Freebies won’t take you anywhere. As an emerging artist, erase the mindset that people will help you for FREE. success doesn’t work that way.

Pay for what you want. People didn’t get to the top by handouts. They worked and paid for things.

  1. No source of income.

The concept of bills and balance can not be cheated. You can only focus on your passion (music) when you’ve your basic needs and bills sorted.

Ensure you have a source of income to sort you out while your music is yet to start paying.

  1. Avoid Record labels.

There are enough bad stories to justify calling some record labels devilish,ย  it is a known fact that most record labels don’t uphold their end of the bargain and usually propose deals that will only suit them.

If it is a must you sign a deal with a record label, be open-minded and get a sound lawyer before you sign to avoid stories.

  1. A beautiful studio equals Quality jobs.

This is as wrong as it could be. As an emerging artist, always understand that the producer is what completes the studio, not the other way around.

A skilled producer with a well-equipped studio equals Quality jobs.

  1. Wrong Music Distribution.

Last but not least is not choosing a suitable music distribution platform. When you take time as an artist to write, create and record songs, it’s only fitting for you to distribute them the right way. As an independent artist, you need a music distributor that is actually focused on the crafts and development of indie artists i.e Boomkit

Aside from giving you 100% FREE music to all major streaming platforms globally, Boomkit also gives you access to growth tools for the proper development of your career as an independent artist.
